The Paris Olympics faced unpredictable weather, with rain, blistering heat, and now a week of pleasant sunshine. As the Games come to a close, temperatures are expected to reach 95 degrees Fahrenheit (35 degrees Celsius) on Sunday. Heat stress caused by rising temperatures and humidity levels is becoming a greater threat to athletes, leading to cases of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. A CNN analysis suggests that most cities will be unable to host the Games during summer in the coming decades due to unsafe humid heat conditions. Suggestions to change the timing of the Summer Olympics or choose cities with cooler climates are growing. The next Summer Games will be held in Los Angeles and Brisbane in 2032. More than 10 countries have expressed interest in hosting the 2036 Summer Olympics, but most of them are projected to exceed the heat stress limit. Previous host cities like Beijing, Athens, Rome, Atlanta, Tokyo, and Seoul would also face extreme heat conditions. The Tokyo 2020 Games, held in 2021, experienced record-breaking heat stress levels, resulting in some athletes suffering from heat-related illnesses. Experts are calling for changes in sports scheduling and rules to address the risks associated with extreme heat.
